Editor’s Note—October 2017

Well, the seasons are changing, and we are leaving summer and headed into fall. Before we know it, colder temperatures and snow will be in the forecast. It is important to care properly for the equipment that provides your livelihood in the pressure washing industry. Though it is only the month of October, it is helpful to plan in advance, which is why you should take time today to read Diane Calabrese’s article on page 6, “Winterizing and Storage of Equipment.”

In the article, Karl Loeffelhotz of Mi-T-M Corporation in Peosta, IA, recommends a pump saver for a cold-water unit. “It will provide longer pump life,” explains Loeffelholz. “It prevents harmful build-up of hard water mineral deposits and preserves and protects against freezing for safe cold weather storage.”

Al Stasny with AR North America in Fridley, MN, points out the necessity of preparing the unit properly for storage. He says, “. . . drain the spray gun and hose. Leave the hose disconnected from the unit, drain and clean the water filter, and change the pump oil and antifreeze at the pump’s wet end.” These are just a few of the vital tips provided in this article.

On November 11th on Veteran’s Day, we have the wonderful opportunity to say thank you and honor the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. With that in mind, turn to page 14 and read the article “Veteran-owned Businesses,” where author Diane Calabrese interviews three military veterans in the pressure washing industry—Kevin Palladino, Kyle O’Hearn, and Michael Drummond. They answer several questions: What motivated you to start your business? Did your military service help prepare you for being a business owner; What is the most interesting job your company has completed? What do you enjoy most about being a business owner? Would you tell us a bit about your military service?

Finally, I’d like to encourage all of us to look for the ways we can come alongside those whose lives have been turned upside down in Texas and Louisiana by Hurricane Harvey. We will have opportunities to help fellow men, women, boys, and girls who have been impacted by Hurricane Irma in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. Let’s not sit on the sidelines and do nothing while many people in our country need help.
